Gems & Stones

“Stones are the gifts of the Earth.” They orignate from the Earth, thus its no wonder that our ancestors (even some today) believe they possess magical abilities. Stone magic is as old as time. Mankind has been attracted to their beauty, power and mystery. Later they were offered as sacrifices to various deities, buried for blessings & fertility of the land. They have been connected to religion, rituals and magic.


There exist two basic types of energy within stones. These two types are projective and receptive energies. Stones which possess projective energy are those that are bright, outward, agressive, and electrical. The energies they possess are strong and forceful. Commonly, they used to deflect evil, overcome inertia and create movement. Stones which possess receptive energies are usually dense or heavy, occasionally opaque, red, orange, yellow, gold, or clear.Commonly, these stones are used to contact the conscious mind, communication, pyshic awareness, and grounding purposes. They are soothing, calming, inward, magnetic, promote mediation, spirituality, wisdom and mysticisms. Most stones possess one of the two types of energy.


Examples of projective are: ruby, diamond, lava, topaz, and rhodocrosite.
Exampled of receptive are: aquamarine,moonstone, emerald, holey stones, rose quartz, pink tourmaline, and kunzite.

The color of stones

The colors of stones are also a vital factor in unlocking their power. The basic colors that are considered are red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white and black. Multicolored stones are those which consist of various colors such as the bloodstone, tourmaline, and opal possess more complex energies.

Red - this color is viewed as the color of blood, birth and death. They are usually projective, active, related to the planet Mars and the element of Fire. Commonly, they are considered protective and work to strengthen the body and will power. They may be used to promote courage, to lend energy to the body, and to provide additional energy to rituals. In ancient times, they were worn as antidotes to poison, to keep ones thoughts pure, banishing anger and all violent emotions. Also they may have been used to guard against fire and lightning. In healing, they were associated with relieving anemia, to halt bleeding and to heal wounds.


Pink - this color is receptive, and packed with loving vibrations. They are calming, soothing, and are used to destress, relax physical body, and to attract love or to strengthen love that is already present. The color is associated with the planet Venus. They are commonly used to promote peace, happiness, joy and laughter.


Orange - this color is projective and possess some of the fire of red stones, however it is much more gentler. The color is associated with the Sun. They are often used for protective rituals and those designed to promote illumination. They are related to personal power and are good for those with low self esteem or to expand ones awareness of self-worth. They are thought to attract luck and are a symbol of success.


Yellow - this color is projective and associated with the planet Mercury or the sun. Often they are used in rituals involving communication and can be used to strengthen the conscious mind, and to heighten visualize abilities. In healing, they are used to promote digestion, to regulate thenervous system, and for skin problems.


Green - this color is often used as a grounding or balancing stones, and are associated with the Earth, of nature, fertility, life, and is often linked with red in religion and magic. They are commonly used in healing magic or worn to guard the health. They are thought to strengthen the eyes, control the kidneys, relieve stomach problems and prevent migraines. They may also be worn during gardening to promote luxiriant growth, or placed within the earth for this purpose. Often times they are used in spells involving money, riches, prosperity, and luck.


Blue - this color is associated with the ocean, sleep, and twilight, the element of water, and the planet Neptune. They are receptive stones, promoting peace and possess a calming influence. They are often worn to promote healing, reduce fevers, remove ulcers, and eliminating inflammations. They are also used for purification.


Purple - (or indigo) this color is receptive and spiritual. It is associated with the planet Jupiter and Neptune, and with mysticism and purification. They are often used for mediation, psychic work or during any ritual designed to contact the subconscious mind. The color is one of healing and peace. They are worn to maintain health and are sometimes given to unruly children to promote obedience. They are often used to relieve complaints in the head such as headaches, mental illness, concussion and hair problems. They have been used to relieve depression and to promote restful sleep. The color is deeply associated with organized religion and often worn to contact higher forces.


White - this color is receptive and associated with the Moon. It is intimately linked with sleep and pyschism. In the past white stones, especially chalcedony were worn to promote lactation by mothers having problems breastfeeding. Often they are considered lucky and used to promote good fortune, as well as protection after dark.


Black - this color is receptive and represents the Earth, and is associated with the planet Saturn, which is the planet of restrictions. Stones fo this color are often symbolic of self-control, resilence and quiet power. Sometimes they are viewed as protective, but most times are used to ground a person. The color is also associated with outer space, and of the absence of light.

The shape of the stone may also be a factor in the mystical power of the stone. Naturally, stones come in shapes of masses to hexagonal crystals. Often times stones are broken up and changed into various shapes especially by lepiaries who tumble and polish the stones. The common shapes are circlar or round, long, thin stones, square, heart-shaped, triangular, pyramid, and diamond shape.

Round stones symbolize the receptive powers of the universe, of magnetism, and the Mother Goddess. Often they are linked with the reproductive system and to represent the woman in healing rituals. They are used in love spells and in all matter of attracting spells.
Long, thin stones are phallic symbols. They are associated with projective and represent electricity and the Great God of most Pagan religions. They can be used for protection such carrying or hanging in a doorway or before a mirror.


Round and long stones can be used in conjunction for love spells, and for attracting love. Stones that are egg-shaped are often used to stimulate creativity or fresh ideas, and have been placed on altars during fertility rituals.


Square stones symbolizes the Earth, prosperity, and abundance and are usually used in like spells. They promote stability and grounding.
Heart-shaped stones are used magically to stimilate or attract love.


Triangular stones are protective and used in protection spells or hung around for like purpose.


Pyramid shaped stones are rare in nature, but increasingly common among dealers and are associated with the concentrated release of energies through a point.


Diamond-shaped stones are used to attract riches.

Magic of jewelry

In the beginning jewelry was most likely worn as protection such as to ward off evil or negativity. Later on jewelry become more ornamental or as statement to define class or social standing. Jewelry even today still has ceremonial and ritual uses and meanings, such as wedding bands.

The ring is a symbol of a circle, of eternity, unity, reincarnation and the universe. In earlier times the ring was associated with the Sun and Moon. Today, rings are still a accepted symbol of marriages and other unions. In a magical sense, rings were viewed a binding, a means to bind one with power or with your energy.

A necklace is simply a large rin worn around the neck. Its powers and uses are similar to that of rings, however, since they are worn near the heart, they can be used to work on the emotions, or to attract love or strengthen it. A necklace possessing the stones is more powerful then the individual stones by themselves.

Earrings were worn to ward of negativity and disease. Later, they became a symbol of slavery, since slaves wore earings to mark their status. Pierced earings in general are often recommended to strenghten weak eye sight, and in many cultures body pierces have protective elements such as in India with nose piercings.
